EAST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
Purpose
EAST will award Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) to support increased participation of students with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Examples of the types of activities supported:
- Projects designed to encourage the participation of students with disabilities to pursue careers in STEM;
- Development of new equipment, software, or materials to improve access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics;
- Modification of equipment, software, or materials that improve access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and
- Revision of curricula or laboratories to improve their accessibility for all students, including students with disabilities.

Eligibility
The EAST SURF program provides stipends to undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, or considering STEM careers, to conduct research with a research sponsor for 8 weeks during the summer. Students who will conduct research at institutions in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Massachusetts are eligible to apply. Students must be entering sophomores, juniors, or seniors in good standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in their major field of study.

Stipend
Students selected for the program will be designated EAST Fellows and will receive a stipend of $2,600 plus up to $400 for materials and supplies. Cost sharing of housing and meals by the student's home institution is encouraged.
