About EAST

Eastern Alliance in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (EAST) works to increase the number and diversity of students with disabilities receiving degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and ultimately entering STEM careers in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, EAST seeks to:

  1. Improve the rates of participation, retention, and advancement of individuals with disabilities in STEM by coordinating and increasing the availability and accessibility of resources to students;
  2. Change academic and professional climates by increasing recognition of needs and abilities of individuals with disabilities; and
  3. Achieve program sustainability by catalyzing, strengthening, and coordinating STEM activities.

EAST's strategies and resources include workshops on STEM instruction for educators, seed grants for innovative STEM activities at all educational levels, competitive summer undergraduate research scholarships, and a peer tutor network and mentoring opportunities with working scientists.

The alliance is expected to impact over 100,000 students with disabilities drawn from 746 school districts and 129 institutions of higher education in northern New England. EAST partners include: The University of Southern Maine, The Spurwink Institute, Springfield Technical Community College, Plymouth State University, The Vermont Institutes, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
